Research Interests:
  • Properties and processes within the mantle (diamond genesis, the water cycle, the oxygen cycle, phase transformations and mantle discontinuities, spin transitions, core formation, transport properties)
  • Mantle geochemistry (iron and carbon isotope fractionation, development of geothermometers and geobarometers, element partitioning, oxygen fugacity, water solubility)
  • Crystal chemistry of minerals (site distribution of iron, magnetic properties, electronic and structural phase transformations)
  • Structure and properties of melts and glasses (coordination of iron and its effects on physical properties, redox relations, application to natural magmatic systems)
  • Material structure and properties (oxygen vacancies, ionic conductivity, iron distribution and concentration)
  • Methodological developments (Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray emission spectroscopy using the electron microprobe, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, synchrotron nuclear resonance methods)
