Bayerisches Geoinstitut at the University of Bayreuth (Germany) invites
applications for the position of a

Postdoctoral Researcher (E13, 100%)

or

PhD student (E13, 60%)

The appointment will be initially for two years in the case of the postdoctoral researcher or for three years in the case of the PhD student, starting from October 1, 2019. A later starting date can be negotiated. The appointment may be extended depending on performance and budgetary constraints. This position is funded by the ERC Advanced Grant “Chemistry and transport properties of bridgmanite controlling lower-mantle dynamics” (Acronym: “UltraLVP”). The successful candidate will be involved in one or more of the following investigations: (1) phase relations of bridgmanite and coexisting phases in Mg-Fe-Al-Si-O systems; (2) grain-growth rate of bridgmanite; and (3) self-diffusion coefficients in bridgmanite under mid-mantle conditions using multi-anvil presses. In these investigations, Mössbauer spectroscopy, thermodynamic modelling, transmission electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry will be conducted under the supervision of experts in these fields. The successful candidate will also contribute to development of ultrahigh-pressure and ultrahigh-temperature generation by multi-anvil presses.

Applicants should have a strong interest in research using multi-anvil presses and their technical development. Applications including CV, publication list, statement of research interests, and copies of university certificates should be sent as one single pdf file to tomo.katsura@uni-bayreuth.de. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
